Sited outdoors in the city centre, John Gerrard’s new piece Infinite Freedom Exercise (near Abadan, Iran) became an infinitely evolving hyper realistic virtual world, played out 24 hours a day.

On the screen a single figure, dressed in generic army fatigues, moved continuously through a series of exercises against the backdrop of a Persian landscape.

Using 3D motion scanning, these exercises are captured from movement created in collaboration with award-winning choreographer Wayne McGregor.

The result was a compelling and unsettling reflection on modernity, portraiture and history.
