Rusholme Project – Shisha

29 June 2007 - 8 Sept. 2007 Whitworth Art Gallery

Shisha – the UK’s premier international agency for contemporary South Asian crafts and visual arts – is launching new and innovative site-specific artworks by internationally renowned artists Subodh Gupta from India and Rashid Rana from Pakistan.

Subodh Gupta’s awe-inspiring and monumental sculptures evoke the sights and sounds of India and the commission at Whitworth Art Gallery will reflect Rusholme’s famous “Curry Mile”.

A short distance down Wilmslow Road, Rashid Rana’s spectacular site-specific work at Rusholme Jobcentre Plus will celebrate the area’s local heroes. Rana uses his characteristic mosaic of images to subtly convey the visually rich character of the area through its people.

Shisha’s launch event will be held on Friday 29 June and will feature free outdoor interactive art led by the inspirational Spearfish in Rusholme.

Shisha, established in 2001 and based in Manchester, acts as an influential cultural organisation, supporting artists’ development, building audiences and strengthening the infrastructure for disseminating the work of South Asian contemporary artists.
