Richard Wagner reinvented the musical language of opera and created one of its greatest works with
Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring Cycle).

Continuing the Festival’s project of commissioning new contexts for existing work, The Madness of an Extraordinary Plan is a brand new dramatic prologue to The Ring Cycle. Written by Gerard Mcburney, directed by Neil Bartlett and featuring three actors plus the Hallé and Sir Mark Elder.

This free event aims to welcome audiences who are new to Wagner to experience some of the most exciting music ever written, in arguably the best orchestral acoustic in the country.
