Five dance pieces that inspired me

Lucinda Childs

June 29, 2017

Ahead of the opening of Available Light, we asked choreographer Lucinda Childs to share five pieces of dance that have inspired her.

1) Steps in the Street (1936) by Martha Graham: a stunning early work of Graham for an ensemble of women in linear motion

Note that the new Martha Graham production of this choreography, as is reflected in this video, includes scenic design by Frank Gehry, an  Available Light collaborator.

2) Les Sylphides (1909) by Mikhail Fokine: an abstract one act ballet which was perhaps inspired by the visit to Russia of Isadora  Duncan

3) Agon (1957) by George Balanchine: a brilliant collaboration with the musical composition of Igor Stravinsky

4) Stravinsky Violin Concerto (1972) by George Balanchine: another extraordinary collaboration with the composer

5) In the Middle Somewhat Elevated (1987) by William Forsythe: it changed the face of dance

Lucinda Childs choreographed Available Light, which you can see as part of MIF17 from 6th to 8th July. Tickets are available here.
