We support creative learning in schools and colleges in Greater Manchester year-round, helping pupils of all ages to develop their creativity through key initiatives inspired by some of the world premieres on our Festival programme.
We are currently developing a new programme of learning as we head towards opening our doors at The Factory. We believe learning is for life, never stops and we are determined to ignite change in our communities. We want to invent tomorrow together and work with young people, artists, teachers, educationalists, community groups and organizations, and embed co-creation, peer led review and collaboration in all of work.
Recent learning collaborations in MIF21 included Today I Feel Like Manchester..., a health and wellbeing collaboration for just under 1000 primary school children working with artist Jeppe Hein in partnership with Therme, and a celebratory showcase with Manchester Unite Foundation as part of MIF21’s Festival Square programme.

Atmospheric Memory free education programme
Together with the Science and Industry Museum (SIM) and FutureEverything, we created an engagement programme inspired by Atmospheric Memory, a new work by artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer that uses both state-of-the-art technology and classic effects to transform air turbulence caused by speech into something we can see, hear and even touch.
We invited school groups to experience this immersive installation throughout MIF19. In the lead up to the Festival, we invited pupils from Greater Manchester schools to respond creatively to Lozano-Hemmer’s amazing ‘Atmospheric Machines’.

Animals of Manchester (including HUMANZ)
Thirteen children from Claremont Primary School in Moss Side have joined us as Young Ambassadors to discover more about live art and help create Performing Animals, a key part of MIF19’s Animals of Manchester (including HUMANZ). Our Young Ambassadors have worked with artist Sibylle Peters, the project’s co-curator and lead artist, to choose six artists from around the globe to take part in the event, which will take place at the Whitworth and in Whitworth Park on the Festival’s closing weekend (20–21 July). Each of the selected artists created a 30-minute performance lecture for children and families, which was co-hosted by our Young Ambassadors at the event.
Creative Critics encouraged children and young people to engage more deeply with art as both audience members and arts critics. The project celebrated young people’s unique voices while also helping them to develop their critical appreciation and communication skills – in the words of Judith Mackrell, The Guardian’s dance critic, giving them ‘confidence to trust their own curiosity, their own reactions’.
Through Creative Critics, we invited pupils from Manchester Communication Academy in Harpurhey and Newall Green High School in Wythenshawe to attend MIF19 performances and then write reviews which we published here.
