MIF International Circle
‘One of the leading worldwide incubators for new, cutting-edge art. Though the festival has an international outlook and reputation, it also showcases Manchester stories and talent.’Christopher D. Shea, New York Times
The MIF International Circle was founded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation in 2015 in order to support MIF’s wide-ranging international programme.
Since the first edition of MIF in 2007, we have invited a tremendous variety of outstanding artists from around the world to develop and present new works at the Festival. Over the last ten years MIF has established an international reputation for creating and sustaining productions over several presentations and multiple evolutions. These shows include a wide range of genres, scales and media.
‘Few cultural events worldwide have established themselves with such clarity and self-confidence as MIF’.Peter Apsden, The Financial Times
To commission and produce the works on our biennial programme, we often collaborate closely with international partners, who then go on to present the works after their premieres at MIF. For example, Returning to Reims was co-commissioned by MIF and the Schaubühne Berlin the show was staged for 15 performers following its premiere at HOME during MIF17 and it has since travelled to St Ann’s Warehouse for 22 performances in New York City. Over the last two years MIF co-commissioning and touring have presented 12 projects which played in 31 venues, across 752 performances, these were seen by a total audience of 290,300.
Other MIF projects go on to tour the world after their Manchester premieres. In recent years, we have taken our shows to venues as diverse as Miraikan in Tokyo, Harpa in Reykjavik, Fotomuseo Cuatro Caminos in Mexico City, Sadler’s Wells in London, Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York and the Palais Garnier in Paris, and to festivals including Art Basel in Switzerland, Vivid in Sydney, Luminato in Toronto and Moscow International Biennale of Contemporary Art.
‘In just over a decade, from its early beginnings in 2005, MIF has helped secure Manchester’s centre-stage position on the global arts scene, and has become a much-talked-about and anticipated fixture on the international arts calendar. It has attracted thousands of visitors from around the world, providing an important economic boost to the city, while also inspiring local people to get involved.’Sir Richard Leese, Leader, Manchester City Council
