MIF helps local job seekers develop careers in the Arts

Thirty-nine local job seekers were given a unique opportunity in December to learn valuable skills to help them gain employment in the creative industries with a life-changing new scheme launched by Manchester International Festival, which reflects The Factory’s vision to create jobs, skills, and training for local people across Manchester.

The trainees from Greater Manchester, aged 19+ and registered unemployed, were enrolled on a two-week Creative Training Academy, where they undertook a variety of training to equip them with future careers in the arts.

Seven of the participants were then offered paid positions as part of MIF’s inaugural Creative Traineeship Programme, which is running from January to August 2019 and includes the opportunity to work on the world-class Festival itself. The roles, which span across Development, ICT, Guest Relations, Creative Engagement, Producing and Digital, will provide a unique chance to work amongst some of the best in their field.

One trainee said of their experience: “The Creative Academy, I feel, is going to change my life. I have gained confidence and feel much more at ease to speak up for myself and put across my opinion. I feel my passion for the arts has been utterly re-ignited. I have gained so many new friends and contacts. All in all an awesome and life-changing experience.”

Another remarked: “The experience as a whole has been great: it’s really reinvigorated me and made it seem like finding a job that I like isn’t as impossible as it once seemed. It also reminded me that there are companies that are compassionate and care about their employees.”

The Factory will be a rich source of apprenticeships and a major training centre for local people wanting to work in a huge range of roles in the creative industries, from technicians and producers to marketing positions – meaning that people wanting to work in this sector can pursue careers, working alongside world-class talents, without having to leave the region. There will also be opportunities for local artists to develop and grow.
