Adonis (b. 1930 Syria)

Internationally renowned as a poet, essayist and theoretician of Arab poetics, Adonis has been described as the greatest living poet of the Arab world. His accomplished calligraphic painting and collages often incorporate classic Arabic and his own poetry. In addition to his poetry, for which he was awarded the Goethe Prize in 2011 amongst others, Adonis has written about literature and art and continues to be a critical voice in magazines and newspapers on political and social affairs.
