A video game that explores Black trans identity, spirituality and resistance through vampires – all wrapped up in a 90s horror aesthetic

Choose your fighter. Artist and world builder Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley invites you to play I CAN’T FOLLOW YOU ANYMORE – a new browser-based video game launching on Halloween 2023.

Danielle’s practice as an artist is about archiving Black trans experiences and using technology to imagine places that centre trans bodies. Known for working across animation, sound, performance and video game development, Danielle often creates video games as artworks – immersing the audience in a world and prompting them to reflect on their own identities.

For I CAN’T FOLLOW YOU ANYMORE, Danielle looks at the mythology around vampires, using this as a metaphor to explore themes of Black trans identity and spirituality. Select a character and dance-or-fight your way through a world designed by Danielle where authority is there to be questioned.

With a glitchy '90s PS1 look and a nod to '00s vampire-obsessed pop culture, I CAN’T FOLLOW YOU ANYMORE combines aesthetics, gameplay and storytelling to centre Black trans experiences. Do you dare to play?
