Manchester, like all cities, exists on three planes: the city that exists today, the city that has gone and the city that was only ever imagined. It has dreamed deep dreams for 250 years, variously conjuring itself up as an industrial utopia, a reformed industrial metropolis, a happy cooperative of workers and bureaucrats and, most radically, a model post-war city. Calling at an array of remarkable locations and inspired by Utopolis Manchester, Utopian Manchester touches on several MIF19 themes with authority and humour to consider how we view cities and explore the reality and unreality of our ambitions for them.
