Utopolis will be presented in Saint Petersburg from 7 – 15 September 2019 as part of Theatre Olympics 2019. Utopolis Manchester was a visionary site-specific work that uses intricate tapestries of sound and voices to transform our view of the city. Gathering in dozens of small groups at multiple locations, exploring the people and places that shape Manchester’s daily life – and discovering the many ways in which citizens build communities, society and democracy. As our assembly reaches critical mass, a question emerges. Can a group of disparate individuals come together to forge a utopian state? And how large can this system grow before it falls apart? Created by Rimini Protokoll and inspired by Thomas More’s Utopia, Utopolis Manchester asks whether another society might exist, if only for a utopian moment… Event FAQ’s listed here Commissioned by Manchester International Festival, Theatre Olympics 2019, Schauspiel Köln and Coventry UK City of Culture 2021. This event takes place across a series of secret locations across Manchester city centre. Groups of participants will start from a variety of meeting points around Manchester city centre and at the northern end of Oxford Road.
The event lasts for approximately 4-4.5 hours, and around half of that time will be spent outdoors.
The event involves significant amounts of time walking or travelling between locations.
Walking distances and routes will depend on your initial meeting point. On average, you can expect to spend around 1-1.5 hours travelling between venues, walking up to three miles in the process.
Although most people will walk, you are welcome to use other modes of travel, including public transport or bicycles.
There are a number of shorter routes available. If you have identified yourself as having access requirements or limited mobility when you booked you will have been assigned one of these.
Not all of the meeting points have toilet facilities. All of the venues used from around 45-60 minutes into the event have toilets, including accessible toilets.
Not all of the meeting points contain seating, but all venues used from around 45-60 minutes into the event will offer seating. If you require seating at every location, please contact us on email@example.com or 0161 817 4547 (10am-5pm daily).
All venues used from around 45-60 minutes into the event offer lift access to upper or lower floors.
This event is audio-led and takes place at a number of different locations, some of them within noisy environments. Audio is delivered via a portable speaker, and it is not possible to adjust volume levels.
There is also a print element to the show, containing navigational instructions. If you require a large print version of these, please contact us on firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 0161 817 4547 (10am-5pm daily).
If you have any concerns about access at this event, or your access needs have changed since you booked, please contact us on email@example.com or 0161 817 4547 (10am-5pm daily).
